Before Fitting De-Bug Clean Fuel Units onto Ron Moon's Nissan Patrol - Fitted De-Bug L500 and now 20+ years later, this vehicle travelled across Australia, Africa and Russia, STILL NO DIESEL BUGS

What are Diesel Bugs

Twenty-seven (27) individual species of bugs utilize and degrade hydrocarbons. To quote NCBI publication: Microbial Degradation of Hydrocarbons—Basic Principles for Bioremediation: “Microorganisms possess the ability to decompose hydrocarbons as an energy source” National Center for Biotechnology Information
  • Species of Bacteria feast on the energy of hydrocarbons, growing rapidly, swelling to split in two. The rate of growth is astonishing; One spore becomes 262,144 in 6 hours. Typical bacteria are known to utilise hydrocarbons: Aeruginosa, Pseudomonas species, Flavobacterium spp., Acinetobacter spp., Alcaligenes spp., Micrococcus spp., Arthobacter spp., Corynebacterium spp., Brevibacterium spp., Klebsiella app.
  • Yeast flourish in acid environments. Typical yeasts that populate hydrocarbons are Candida spp., Saccharomyces spp., Torula spp., Torulopsis spp., Hansenula spp.
  • Fungus grows in the form of branched hyphae, a few microns in diameter, forming thick, tough, intertwined mycelial mats at fuel/water interfaces. Typical moulds which degrade hydrocarbons are Penicillium spp., Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp., Monilia spp., Botrytis spp, Cunninghammella spp., Scopulariopsis spp., Cladosporium resinae, Hormoconis resinae.
  • Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) are a specific group of bacteria that SRB produce hydrogen sulphide and are directly involved in many microbial corrosion reactions, including sulphide souring of stored distillate products. SRB flourish in the presence of other microbes.

Effects of diesel bug contamination

  • Reduced filter life (fuel filter clogging and blockage),
  • Clogging of Fuel Injectors,
  • The decreased service life of fuel system components,
  • Decrease power,
  • Increase fuel burn,
  • Increased exhaust smoke,
  • Decreased reliability,
  • Total engine failure (starvation of fuel),
  • Coalescer malfunctions,
  • Uneven cylinder wear due to variations in fuel flow,
  • Decreased engine life.
